“Wal-Mart is a threat to your job, wages and benefits. It is a threat to working America ’s standard of living. Wal-Mart employs more people than any company in America - with 1.4 million employees and profits of over $10 billion last year. Wal-Mart’s low-wages and inadequate benefits drag down wages and conditions for all working Americans. Now, Wal-Mart has set its sights on the supermarket industry. With their new Neighborhood Markets, Wal-Mart is out to turn good jobs with good benefits into low-wage jobs with inadequate benefits.
WAL-MART DESTROYS JOBS: Wal-Mart doesn’t create jobs, it destroys them. Studies show that for every two jobs created by a Wal-Mart store, the community loses three. Local businesses are destroyed and community living standards get lowered when Wal-Mart moves into the neighborhood.
WAL-MART LOWERS WAGES: Wal-Mart workers make an average of $3 per hour less than
union supermarket jobs, $2 per hour less than all supermarket jobs and $1 per hour less than the
average retail wage. An average Wal-Mart employee makes about $11,700 a year (working 30
hour weeks) -nearly $2,000 below the poverty line for a single mother with two children. Read

WAL-MART’S HEALTH COVERAGE LEAVES MOST WORKERS UNCOVERED: Over
425,000 Wal-Mart employees, most of them women, have no health coverage. Only 38% of
Wal-Mart employees - as compared with a national average of more than 60% - have company-
provided health coverage. An executive bragged that Wal-Mart is able to shift the cost of
insuring its employees to taxpayers - admitting that many Wal-Mart workers get their health care
benefits from state or federal government programs
. A typical store with 200 employees would
cost taxpayes $420,750 a year.
WAL-MART WAGES WAR ON WOMEN WORKERS: Juries have awarded millions of
dollars to Wal-Mart women workers who have filed harassment and discrimination claims
against the retail giant.
WAL-MART’S PHONY “BUY AMERICA ” PROGRAM DISHONORS THE FLAG: Wal-
Mart’s massive “Buy American” advertising program lures customers with the promise of selling
